This K-hip-hop beef is going viral because it involves two prominent figures, veteran Swings and rising star Big Naughty, with accusations of betrayal, a physical altercation, and financial disputes playing out publicly across live streams and diss tracks.
In Korean hip-hop, diss tracks and live streams are common ways for artists to address controversies or engage in public feuds, often drawing significant attention from fans. The concept of 'neighboring rights' is also a key aspect of artists' income in the music industry.
Korean hip-hop fans are in a frenzy after a major beef between veteran rapper Swings and rising star Big Naughty escalated, culminating in Swings' explosive live stream where he laid out his side of the story. What started as subtle jabs has now become a full-blown public spectacle, with accusations of betrayal, financial disputes, and even a physical altercation.
Swings began by addressing the controversy surrounding the sale of his artists' neighboring rights. He clarified that due to his company's difficult financial situation, he had no choice but to sell them. The total amount was around 14-15 billion KRW (approximately $10-11 million USD), with 10 billion KRW going directly to the artists. He emphasized that far from giving them "pocket change," many artists were thrilled to receive a lump sum. Swings also revealed he personally borrowed hundreds of millions of won from friends to ensure artists were paid promptly, and he's diligently repaying those debts himself.
The drama with Big Naughty, however, goes back further. Swings recounted how Big Naughty initially agreed to join his label, WDP, only to suddenly sign with H1GHR MUSIC the very next day. Swings admitted feeling deeply betrayed but chose to let him go amicably. Adding fuel to the fire, Big Naughty later stated in an interview that he wasn't "hip-hop," a comment that deeply disappointed Swings, a passionate advocate for the genre.
The tension finally boiled over at a party for Giriboy. Swings described Big Naughty being extremely intoxicated, to the point of cursing at Giriboy. When Big Naughty, sitting next to Swings, pushed his arm during a toast, Swings, already annoyed, pushed back. The situation escalated, with Swings eventually grabbing Big Naughty, pushing him against a wall, and yelling expletives, telling him to "get lost" if he wasn't hip-hop.
Following this, Big Naughty released a diss track, but public opinion largely sided with Swings. Swings, wanting to avoid a prolonged fight with a much younger artist, tried to reconcile through Kid Milli, but Big Naughty didn't respond. Eventually, they met by chance at a pocha street with Han Yo Han, talked things out, and seemingly reconciled, even exchanging texts. However, Swings claims Big Naughty continued to subtly diss him afterward.
Swings concluded his live stream by stating he considers Big Naughty a genius and has no desire to continue fighting. He expressed that he's matured and no longer wants to engage in such disputes. He also briefly dismissed other serious allegations, such as "sexual favors for artists" and "high schooler backdoor," as not worth addressing. The beef has now drawn in other artists, with Swings' labelmate Kim Gamjeon dissing Big Naughty, and Big Naughty releasing a counter-diss track alleging assault and financial misconduct. The internet is now buzzing, especially with streamer Looksam set to host Big Naughty on his show, promising more drama to unfold.
