This 2020 incident continues to resurface in Korean online communities, serving as a prime example of the deep-seated public distrust and frustration with insurance companies and their perceived unethical practices regarding claim payouts.
A notorious incident from 2020 is resurfacing in Korean online communities, reminding everyone of the time an insurance company pulled a 'meoktwi' (eat-and-run) scam so audacious, netizens joked even the devil would flinch. The scandal involved Hanwha General Insurance, which allegedly tried to deny a legitimate payout. The fallout was immense: despite Hanwha Life and Hanwha General Insurance being separate entities under the massive Hanwha 'chaebol' (conglomerate), the entire 'Hanwha' brand faced a 'carpet bombing' of public outrage. The situation escalated to such a degree that the company eventually reversed its decision, and the CEO of Hanwha General Insurance had to personally visit and apologize, a rare move that highlighted the severity of the public backlash.

This is why insurance salespeople are called 'insurance peddlers' and are considered one of the 'four trash jobs.' lmaooo
Anyone who's dealt with an opposing insurance company for settlement after an accident knows. I've had 3 accidents, and all 3 times, those insurance reps were cold-blooded psychopaths. They'd try every trick to pay even one penny less, subtly probing what I knew, dragging things out, slashing the settlement in half. Only when I threatened to report them to the Financial Supervisory Service (Korea's financial regulator) did they double it.
Hanwha General Insurance, lol. I have medical indemnity insurance (실비보험, shilbi) with them. After surgery, I claimed it, but the surgery cost wasn't listed. I called, and they said, 'Oh, that's a separate review, it'll be approved and paid out today.' I told a friend who works in insurance, and they said Hanwha was just messing around, that it's supposed to be paid together, but they try to test you and if you don't know, they just skip it. Those b*stards, lol.
That's why the government is trying to get rid of 1st generation medical indemnity insurance, lmaoooo.
When you pay for insurance, it's 'my money,' but when you try to get it back, they're like, 'Why is that *your* money, you f*cker?' right? I don't know why people even get insurance.
This was the case where lawyer Han Moon-chul (a famous traffic accident lawyer) got super pissed off and resolved it, even saying he'd take it on again anytime if they tried to pull any more crap later.
Actually, more people do receive benefits from insurance. These cases are rare, and it's helpful in reality. Look at medical indemnity insurance alone: if someone with 1st gen medical indemnity insurance gets cancer, they can receive non-covered treatments within the annual limit without paying a single penny. If they also have cancer insurance, they get money to live even if they can't work.
I hope the family of the bastard who thought of doing that goes through the exact same thing, f*ck.
The CEO would be innocent even if he beat them with a bat, lol.
Since then, quite a few people stopped using Hanwha insurance.
