Pop-up stores are a massive trend in Korea, especially in hip areas like Seongsu, drawing huge crowds for exclusive experiences and, let's be real, the freebies. This post captures the FOMO and the unique consumer culture around these fleeting events.
Seongsu-dong is Seoul's current 'it' neighborhood, constantly buzzing with trendy cafes and pop-up stores that are a huge part of youth culture. Musinsa is one of Korea's biggest online fashion and beauty retailers, making their pop-ups highly anticipated.
Yo, it's Mui! So last week I was in Seongsu, just vibing and checking out some pop-ups, right? LMFAOOO but no way, I just realized the one I went to was only from March 25th to April 5th, so it's already OVER. Dead π. Guess I'm just archiving this one, no cap. This was my first time actually stepping into a Musinsa Beauty pop-up space, usually I just see them in trend reports. There was a whole waiting line, and they had us standing strictly within this black line. Once enough people piled up, they literally blocked the entrance like a fish farm, I'm screaming π.
The Lumir One Coat Glow Lip Tint packaging had this wavy vibe, and the tables inside totally matched it. NGL, I was hyped to see so many cool-tone products, even did a quick cool-tone test! They also had a bunch of eyeshadow palettes. The Musinsa Beauty pop-up space itself wasn't actually that big, which lowkey surprised me. But these giant mock-up models? They totally caught my eye. I was legit wondering how much they'd cost, thinking 'hmm, the shape's simple, maybe not too bad?'
And then, the main event everyone was there for: the gacha machine! You get one spin if you follow them on KakaoTalk, Instagram, or Musinsa Beauty. I scored a liquid glitter, which is a win! My friend got some blue highlighter or shadow, idk. But get this, two of my friends who use LG U+ couldn't even get the Musinsa app to load because of bad reception in Seongsu, so they just gave up. Bro, I don't usually hit up pop-ups super hard, but after visiting and posting this, I had a strong realization: people aren't really there for the 'experience,' they're just there for the freebies and gifts. They barely even look at the products, just straight for the event. And all the bloggers? Just focused on what freebies they can snag. As someone who designs spaces, it's a little sad, but hey, you learn something new every day, right? Seongsu pop-ups are so fun, I highkey wanna live closer to Seongsu now π.
